Flooring is sold by the box, carton, or roll, and every room has cuts. A waste factor of 5% might work for a rectangle of vinyl plank; a diagonal tile layout in a bathroom can need 15%. This calculator takes room area (or length × width), applies a material-specific waste default you can change, converts to boxes from coverage per box, and optionally multiplies by a unit price. It does not check subfloor flatness, moisture tests, or whether your old floor can stay. Measure twice, then add waste for the layout you actually chose.

How to measure
Measure each room separately and add closets. For L-shaped spaces, split into rectangles. Do not use the home’s listed square footage—it includes walls and often a second story you are not flooring. Note the box coverage on the product you intend to buy; it varies widely.

- Why not use the house’s listed square footage?
- Listing square footage is living area, not flooring area. It ignores closets you may want to match, includes space you are not flooring, and is often rounded. Measure the rooms.
- How much waste should I add?
- Straight-lay plank in a simple rectangle: about 5–8%. Tile, herringbone, or many jogs: 10–15%. Always keep a spare box from the same lot for repairs.
