Bulk landscape materials are sold by the cubic yard, bag, ton, or pallet—not by the pretty picture on the bag. These calculators turn a measured bed or lawn into volume and package counts, with waste factors you control. Density (and therefore tons) varies by rock type and moisture; we publish the conversion we use and let you change it. They will not design drainage, grade a slope, or tell you which plant survives your USDA zone. They will stop you from ordering half a yard of mulch for a bed that needs four.

How to measure
For beds, measure length and width in feet, or break irregular shapes into rectangles and add the areas. Depth is usually 2–3 inches for mulch, 2–4 inches for gravel paths, and 4–8 inches for new topsoil depending on what you are planting. For sod, measure the lawn area and add extra for cuts around curves and beds.

- How many bags equal a cubic yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. If bags are 2 cubic feet, you need 14 bags per yard (always round up). Check the bag label—some mulch bags are 1.5 or 3 cubic feet.
- Why do gravel tons and cubic yards disagree?
- Yards measure volume; tons measure weight. Wet, dense crushed stone can exceed 1.5 tons per yard while lighter decorative rock sits closer to 1.2. Edit the tons-per-yard field to match your supplier.
