Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator

Bath remodels are small rooms with expensive waterproofing. This calculator still uses area × a quality range because that is how homeowners are quoted—then it labels the result as a range, not a promise.

Results update as you type. Units stay imperial inside the math.

Room

Type does not change math by itself; it is a reminder to measure the real room. You can still enter any size.

  • Waterproofing failures and hidden rot are common. A per-square-foot range will not find them.
  • Moving a toilet or adding a window is not “the same bathroom.” Treat layout changes as a different project.

How this calculation works

  1. Area is the room rectangle. A 5×8 full bath is 40 sq ft even if the shower is only part of it.
  2. Tiers load typical US installed $/sq ft bands. A tiny powder room can still be pricey per foot because of the toilet rough-in.
  3. Moving wet fixtures applies a 1.3× planning bump. Extras add known dollars (glass door, heated floor) you already priced.

range = area × $/sq ft × (layout ? 1.3 : 1) + extras

What to do next

  • If you are touching the shower, budget for a proper liner or membrane—not just pretty tile.
  • Ventilation matters as much as fixtures. A quiet, ducted fan is cheaper than a mold teardown.
  • Get bids that specify waterproofing system, not only fixture brand names.

FAQ

Why can a powder room cost as much as a small kitchen per foot?
You still pay a plumber and electrician to mobilize, plus tile or wallpaper in a tight space. Per-square-foot averages mislead on very small rooms; use extras and local bids.
Is a tub-to-shower conversion in this range?
Sometimes, if the drain stays. If the drain moves or walls come open, treat it as a layout change and expect the high end—or a custom bid.
